The first of 50 watercolour challenge paintings. This paperclip inspired piece was created using some nifty masking techniques.
- 1 sheet of Cass Art Jumbo Watercolour Pad (I used A4)
- Masking tape
- Masking fluid
- Watercolour paints
- Decorators brush / large watercolour brush
Mask off the edges of the paper using your masking tape. A nice tip here is to use very thick masking tape and tape the sheet down to a board to prevent buckling and frame the image. Using masking fluid draw out the shape of a paper clip. If you’re using masking fluid from a jar don’t use one of your best brushes! Masking fluid sticks to bristles so always use an old brush dipped in washing up liquid or cocktail sticks to draw out.
Allow the masking fluid to dry naturally. Avoid using a hair dryer as this can smudge the lines or melt the masking fluid into the paper.
When dry mix up a colour you like. I used a mix of lemon yellow, cobalt blue and red to get this earthy green.
Using a big brush paint over your sheet.
Allow to dry then simply peel off the tape and mask to reveal your finished image!
